Yale diabetes pioneer Gerald Shulman has received the prestigious Frontiers in Science Award for 2012 from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Shulman is the George R. Cowgill Professor of Physiological Chemistry, Medicine, and Cellular & Molecular Physiology at Yale School of Medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

He spearheaded the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to examine glucose and fat metabolism in humans in order to conduct clinical research on the mechanisms of insulin resistance. Shulman’s groundbreaking investigations have greatly expanded the understanding of type 2 diabetes.
