UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance announces events for fall 2011

’Water Is Rising’ performers

The UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance (WACDance) is offering a variety of events for the public’s enjoyment this fall. The department’s emphasis is threefold: cross-cultural research, dance and community outreach. Events include student and faculty performances, lectures, and symposia and feature an eclectic range of exciting artists and scholars from around the world.

For events at Glorya Kaufman Hall, including those at the Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater and the Glorya Kaufman Garden Theater, or Royce Hall, all-day parking ($11) and short-term parking (payable at pay stations) are available in Lot 4 (enter the campus at Sunset Boulevard and Westwood Plaza). For 16 days and nights in October, the fifth World Festival of Sacred Music will fill Los Angeles’ major venues with 32 performances by artists representing the sacred music and dance traditions of our city. This series of events and performances will explore how the new globalized arena of performance addresses the current tensions between post-colonial and transnational structures through strategies of representation and contestation. As part of the Artist Alphabet Series, this forum brings together the "Water Is Rising" artists (see below) with an interdisciplinary panel of leading experts on climate change, including Mary Nichols, chair of the California Air Resources Board. (Hosted by the UCLA Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance and the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.)

Performance and purpose collide in this powerful world stage premiere that illuminates the plight of the Pacific Islands, which are in danger of disappearing due to climate change–induced rising sea water. Part of the 2011 World Festival of Sacred Music, the performance features 36 dancers and musicians expressing their deep connection to nature and their ancestral past through music and movement. Students and faculty explore the creative potential of intercultural communication through dance, spoken word, performance, visual art, theater and more.

The culminating event of World AIDS Day at UCLA, this program brings together artists from all over campus in a showcase of music, visual art, spoken word, video, dance and fashion based on a theme provided just 48 hours before show time. "48 Hours to Action" affirms healthy sexuality, encourages open communication and underscores the importance of HIV status awareness for the campus community.
