Opera UCLA and UCLA Philharmonia — Offenbach’s ’Orpheus in the Underworld’

Opera UCLA and the UCLA Philharmonia present an irreverent take on the Greek legend of the musician who would go to hell and back for his dead wife. The opera will be performed in English translation by Jeremy Sams. (All productions of Opera UCLA are made possible through the generous support of the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation.)

The UCLA Wind Ensemble presents a smorgasbord of musical hits, including the Hector Berlioz overture "Judges of the Secret Court," Michael Gandolfi’s "Flourishes and Meditations on a Renaissance Theme" and John Adams’ "Lollapalooza."

This concert will feature Stephen Mason as a euphonium guest soloist, along with works by John Philip Sousa, Frank Ticheli, James Horner and Erich Korngold.

The performance features Schubert’s Overture to "Rosamunde" ("Die Zauberharfe"), D. 644; Piston’s Prelude and Allegro for organ and strings; David’s Concertino for trombone, Op. 4; and Grieg’s Three Orchestral Pieces from "Sigurd Jorsalfar," Op. 56 and "Peer Gynt," Suite No. 1.

The event features performances by UCLA music faculty and students: Sheridon Stokes (flute), Jonathan Davis (oboe), Gary Gray (clarinet), John Steinmetz (bassoon), Douglas Masek (saxophone), Chris Cooper (horn), Juliana Gondek (soprano), Richard O’Neill (viola), Ann Perry (piano) and Neal Stulberg (piano). The program includes Poulenc’s Sextet for woodwind quintet and piano, Bruch’s Pieces for clarinet, viola and piano, Op. 83, and the music of Bach.

Performed by faculty artists, students and guests, this concert features music by UCLA faculty composers Roger Bourland, Mark Carlson, Ian Krouse and David Lefkowitz.

The UCLA Philharmonia will play Adès’ Three Dances from "Powder Her Face," Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from "Peter Grimes" and Elgar’s "Enigma" Variations.

The program features a variety of choral music by the Chamber Singers, the University Chorus and the UCLA Chorale — a show for all ages.
