UC San Diego to Compete in ‘RecycleMania’
The UC San Diego campus community will participate in recycling program competition from Feb. 5 to , March 31 against other colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. Dubbed, RecycleMania, the 10-week competition encourages schools to reduce waste, increase recycling and raise awareness of conservation issues across campus.
"This competition continues to gain momentum as our campus’s efforts to recycle increase," said Alonso Noble, assistant superintendent of landscape services and refuse and recycling. "It shows the commitment of our students, staff and faculty who strive to create sustainable solutions. Our goal is to send zero waste to landfills in by 2020. In order to do this, every person on campus will have to help."
At UC San Diego, students and staff from all six colleges are participating in the challenge. Last year was the sixth consecutive year that the campus participated in the friendly nationwide competition and the university was ranked No. 4 in the "Gorilla Prize" category for generating 432 tons of recyclables.
The 2012 RecycleMania is off to another great start with more than 512 colleges and universities participating across North America.
During the competition, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of total recyclables and has the least amount of trash or has the highest recycling rate.
