U-M Regents approve Schembechler Hall renovation
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved renovations to Glenn E. "Bo" Schembechler Hall during its meeting today.
The $9 million renovation to Schembechler Hall will add approximately 7,000 gross square feet and renovate an additional 7,000 gross square feet.
"Our plan is to create a grand entry to announce that you have arrived at the home of Michigan football," said David Brandon, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We are looking to transform the exterior look of this building to match the other facilities on our athletic campus."
Schembechler Hall includes locker rooms, meeting rooms, medical treatment rooms, training areas, weight rooms and administrative offices. The football facility is attached to two indoor football facilities, Oosterbaan Field House and the new Glick Family Field House.
In addition, Schembechler Hall also includes a museum area where the football program displays many of its championship trophies and showcases the 132-year history of the nation’s winningest college football program.
"The museum will be redone and modernized during the renovations," said Brandon. "We will have more interactive displays to go along with the trophies and memorabilia. This space will also highlight the new "Michigan Football Legends" recipients that began this year with the induction of Desmond Howard. The overall renovations will provide a ’wow’ experience for our student-athletes, coaches and recruits as they step inside Schembechler Hall. We also hope to open these spaces up from time to time to allow our fans and supporters to enjoy this celebration of Michigan Football."
There will be a fundraising initiative around the renovation project at Schembechler Hall. Any additional funding will be provided through U-M Athletic Department resources.
The firm Integrated Architecture will design the project. A construction schedule will be presented to the regents when approval is sought for the schematic design.
