Senate to hear reports from Dean Pamela Matson and from ASSU leaders

Speakers include Pamela Matson, dean of the School of Earth Sciences, and four senate student representatives – three undergraduates and one graduate student – elected to positions in the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU).

The Faculty Senate will hear a report from Pamela Matson , the Chester Naramore Dean of the School of Earth Sciences, at its meeting today, Feb. 9.

Matson, who became dean of the school in 2002, is the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor in Environmental Studies and a senior fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.

The School of Earth Sciences is home to 55 faculty members in four departments: Energy Resources Engineering ; Environmental Earth System Science ; Geological and Environmental Sciences ; and Geophysics. It also has two interdisciplinary programs: the Earth Systems Program and the Emmet Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources.

The school has an annual consolidated budget of approximately $45 million.

The senate also will hear reports from the four student representatives to the Faculty Senate: Michael Cruz, president of the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU); Dan DeLong, representative of the ASSU Undergraduate Senate ; Reagan Thompson, ASSU representative-at-large; and Kamil Dada, ASSU Graduate Student Council representative.

The ASSU provides funding to more than 500 volunteer student organizations, which offer cultural, political, recreational and religious programming on campus.

The ASSU represents the interests, needs and perspectives of Stanford students at every level of decision-making within the university. Its elected representatives serve as advocates for Stanford students on issues such as cost of living, diversity, student life and student activities space.

The Faculty Senate meeting will begin at 3:15 p.m. in Room 180 of the Law School.
