"Double Take: Series, Multiples and Prints" to Be at Penn’s Arthur Ross Gallery
PHILADELPHIA -- " Double Take: Series, Multiples and Prints " opens at the University of Pennsylvania’s Arthur Ross Gallery on Nov. 18.
Drawn from the Penn’s diverse art collection, the exhibit features 58 prints, photographs, pastels and sculptures that explore issues of serialism and artistic process.
The earliest works in "Double Take" include Albrecht Dürer’s Engraved Passion Series (1508-13) and two William Hogarth engravings from A Rake’s Progress (1735).
It showcases several series of prints by 20th century artists such as Donald Judd, Henry Moore, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Robert Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist. These artists worked with master printers during the 1960s and ’70s to create prints and multiples, making them affordable to more collectors. These prints were widely distributed and popular.
In celebration of Penn’s Year of Games , two pieces in this exhibition stand out: Audrey Flack’s Royal Flush (1975) and Salvador Dali’s Ace of Diamonds (1971) capture the risk and chance of playing cards.
Special events include a gallery talk on printmaking with University faculty on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 4:30 p.m. and "Game Night at the Gallery," Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and attendees can participate in games and competitive matches of all sorts during this event, which is supported by the Year of Games and the Friends of the Arthur Ross Gallery.
"Double Take" runs through Jan. 15 and is the second in a series of collaborative exhibitions organized by the University’s Office of the Curator and the Arthur Ross Gallery.
The Gallery is at 220 S. 34th St. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and weekends, noon-5 p.m.
The Gallery is free and open to the public.
