Basketball Head Coach Smith Prepares to Face Champs UConn in Opener
Columbia men’s basketball Head Coach Kyle Smith has a long history of leading his teams to victory. While a junior at Hamilton College, his team had a 26-1 record and was ranked #1 in the NCAA Division III. Later, as an associate coach at St. Mary’s College of California, he oversaw that school’s surprising ascent into the Sweet 16 in 2010.
His first season at Columbia last year was no different. Smith led the Lions to a 15-13 record, the first winning season for a new head coach in 33 years. As the team prepares to face defending national champions UConn in its opener this Friday, Nov. 11, Smith sat down to discuss expectations and strategy for the 2011-12 season.
The game with UConn tips off at 7 p.m., and will be televised nationwide on ESPNU. Columbia’s home opener at Levien Gymnasium is on Monday, Nov. 14 against Furman University at 7 p.m.
