University Park, Pa. – The real estate department at the Penn State Smeal College of Business is ranked seventh in the world in research productivity and a Smeal faculty member ranks sixth, according to an academic study forthcoming in The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics.
Smeal ranks No. 7 in real estate research, study finds
Jang C. Jin of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Eden S. H. Yu of the City University of Hong Kong examined the page counts of all articles published from 1973 to 2008 in three major real estate journals: the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, the Journal of Real Estate Research, and Real Estate Economics. The researchers calculated the average number of words per page in each journal to come up with a standardized page count, and then rankd the top-producing real estate faculties according to the number of pages published.
Based on faculty affiliations as of November 2009, Smeal is ranked at No. 7, with 487 journal pages. Taking into account only what are considered to be the top two real estate journals -- Real Estate Economics and the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics -- Smeal ranks fifth. The college’s faculty ranked fourth in the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics alone.
Jin and Yu also rankd individual researchers by the same criteria in their Hall of Fame of real estate scholars. Brent Ambrose, Smeal professor of real estate and director of the college’s Institute for Real Estate Studies , ranks sixth in the Hall of Fame ranking with about 250 pages of research appearing in the three journals.
The complete study, "World Ranking of Real Estate Research: Recent Changes in School Competitiveness and Research Institutions," is published on the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics’ Online First website at http://www.springerlink.com/content/x71ml2r800003n6w online.
