The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts. An opening is available for a postdoctoral researcher interested in the genetic and neural circuit mechanisms that govern simple behavioral responses in the the fruit fly, Drosophila. Current research is focused on how the widely abused drug alcohol co-opts normal brain functions to cause lasting changes in behavior. A candidate mechanism for lasting behavioral change that we studies is transcriptional reprograming of neuronal gene expression. Additionally, we are pursuing how glial cells influence behavior circuits. The successful candidate will take charge of one of these projects. This will entail molecular and genetic screening, genetic manipulation of neuronal and glial properties, sophisticated quantitative behavioral assays, and classic molecular, biochemical, and immunohistochemical techniques. Opportunities for teaching and mentoring of undergraduates are available. The University of California at Merced is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer with a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. The University is supportive of dual career couples.
