Rangelands are abundant on private and public land across western
. In addition to supporting livestock production, rangelands are a key reservoir of biodiversity and play an important role in maintaining wildlife habitat, conserving soils and providing clean water. Rangelands are also increasingly recognized for their ability to support global life systems through the provision of essential ecosystem services such as mitigating climate change via carbon sequestration, water purification via bioremediation, and the conservation of genetic material. Despite their widespread importance, many rangelands, particularly those in the Mixedgrass Prairie and Aspen Parkland regions, are among the most threatened in
as land uses such as intensive agriculture, energy exploration, recreation and urban sprawl, continue to intensify.
This position is interdisciplinary and will build capacity in at least one, and likely several, of the Faculty’s major research themes, including Environmental Sustainability, Food Security, and Individual and Community Well-being. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a leading research, teaching and extension program in various aspects of Range Science that may include applied biology, disturbance and functional ecology, grazing management, and sustainable livestock production systems for western
. The successful candidate will have a PhD and be appointed in a full time continuing tenure track or tenured position at the Assistant or Associate rank. He/she must have a proven track record in university teaching and research in one or more areas such as range science, grazing management, pasture science or rangeland ecology and management. A key requirement of this position will be to teach introductory undergraduate Range Science. The successful candidate will also have strong leadership and communication skills, a track record of working effectively in interdisciplinary projects involving industry, government, other researchers and public interest groups, and have the ability to engage in productive dialogue and debate over controversial issues. The successful candidate will be expected to be affiliated with the University of Alberta’s newly established Rangeland Research Institute, which has a mandate to conduct relevant research and teaching on a wide variety of issues pertinent to rangelands. Knowledge of ranch management is therefore desirable.
