ECOLOGY AND DESIGN The Environmental Design Program invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter. Position Number: 13394 The Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba is dedicated to studies in the design of human settlements. It includes an undergraduate program in Environmental Design as well as four graduate departments offering professional design degrees in Architecture, City Planning, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture, and a Ph.D. program in Design and Planning. Further details can be obtained from the FAUM website http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/architecture/ The Bachelor of Environmental Design degree is a four-year program of studies consisting of two years of common ‘Foundation Studies’ [ED1 and ED2] followed by two years of ‘Intermediate Studies’ [ED3 and ED4]. Foundation Studies challenge the students to understand the holistic nature of environmental design and, at an early stage, to begin to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue with their peers. Intermediate Studies teach students discipline-based design theories and practices through specialized study in Architecture, Interior Environments, or Landscape + Urbanism.
ECOLOGY AND DESIGN Position Responsibilities The ideal candidate must demonstrate exemplary teaching, research, and beginning design studio instruction. The candidate will have a teaching and researchcreative practice background with a focus on natural and human systems within ecology, and an understanding of environmental design as an interdisciplinary field of inquiry. Duties for this tenure track position over two terms normally include a full-time teaching load of two design studio classes per year (Design Studio 1 and Design Studio 2), two lecture courses: Ecology and Design, and Natural and Human Systems. The lecture courses must support design as a way of thinking, making, and contributing to the world. The candidate must have a thorough knowledge of the application of fundamental principles of the science of ecology to the discipline of design, and a research program and track record that supports this. We are looking for a person who can apply their ecological knowledge to address the many complex problems relating to the environment and society, and to help develop an understanding of ecological design practices in local and global contexts. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach and to inspire students, and to facilitate the integration of design within the core principles of ecology in design education. The assigned duties for this position will include teaching, research/creative practice, and service. Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Ph.D. in a design discipline or a relevant allied field. A minimum of a Master’s level design degree is required. A demonstrable body of design studio teaching and research, or design studio teaching and critical practice, is required. Additional Required Qualifications • Ability to conduct and communicate original research and promote academic initiatives; • Ability to contribute in the areas of service and engagement within the Program, Faculty and University; • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment; • Demonstrated ability to develop and teach innovative curriculum. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Position is offered in accordance with the terms and conditions of the current collective agreement between the University of Manitoba and the University of Manitoba Faculty Association.
