Candidates for this position should be scientists interested in developing strong research programs and curriculum offerings in computational and bioinformatics theory and methodology as it applies to biology, computational biology and modeling, biostatistics, systems biology, translational bioinformatics, and/or other relevant areas. The responsibilities of the position include conducting research and securing external funding that contributes to and promotes bioinformatics and teaching within the bioinformatics graduate program, mentoring students, supervising theses and dissertations. The Bioinformatics program currently has 20 Ph.D. students and 33 MS students. The IUPUI campus, with over 30,000 students, is located on a large tract of land adjacent to downtown Indianapolis. SoI was founded 10 years ago and is the first completely new school in the United States devoted exclusively to Informatics and a range of sub-disciplines. SoI offers three Ph.D. programs (Health Informatics, Bioinformatics, and Human-Computer Interaction), four Master’s programs (Health Informatics, Bioinformatics, Human-Computer Interaction, and Media Arts & Science), and three Baccalaureate programs (Informatics, Health Information Administration, and Media Arts & Science). Nearly 1,000 students are enrolled in the school’s programs, with SoI faculty and students enjoying state-of-the art facilities, including fully equipped classrooms, laboratories and offices. SoI is situated on the academic Medical Center Campus, home to the Indiana University School of Medicine, the second largest medical school in the US. During the FY 2009-10, the IUPUI campus alone was awarded $400.34M for funded research, much of it in the health and life sciences. Because of increasing collaboration with the School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, SoI has formed several key research partnerships with these informatics and healthcare organizations. SoI also enjoys collaborative partnerships with the Roudebush VA Medical Center, Indiana University Health (one of the largest health care organizations in the Midwest), the School of Nursing, as well as the Purdue Schools of Engineering and Technology and Science. In June 2009, The Economist stated, "Although every state wants to be a hub for life science, Indiana really is one." Indiana’s comprehensive strengths and leadership in health and health information technology are promoted by BioCrossroads, a statewide initiative, which partners with research institutions, global companies, philanthropic organizations and government to advance growth and innovation. Candidates with a compatible research agenda will be able to participate in these research opportunities as collaborators and/or affiliates of Regenstrief. The School has embarked on a major initiative to enhance computational and bioinformatics research. The School strongly promotes research that is collaborative with colleagues from the life science disciplines within the School, as well as with faculty from other units on the IUPUI campus. Sol also interacts closely with local industry leaders such as Eli Lilly and Dow AgroScience. Requirements for this appointment include a Ph.D., as well as a record of effective teaching and proven publication record. Candidates must have a clearly defined research agenda and must demonstrate the ability to create an externally funded research program, i.e., candidates must also be able to establish an independent team-based program with graduate students and seek funding to support them. Candidates must also be able to facilitate interdisciplinary research, as well as pioneer collaborative relationships with faculty and programs across the IU School of Medicine, the University, and nationally.
