Assistant Professor, Interior Design The Department of Interior Design invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2012 or soon after. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Ph.D. in a design discipline or a relevant allied field. Consideration may be given to those candidates who hold a master’s degree in interior design or a closely related field and have demonstrated competence in teaching in interior design and in conducting research. Position Number: 12056. Duties for this tenure-track position include a full-time teaching load of three undergraduate and/or graduate courses per year, graduate supervision, research in the candidate’s chosen area of expertise, and service within the university and community.
Preferred Qualifications • Ph.D. in design discipline or relevant allied field; • NCIDQ certification or LEED accreditation or other recognized certification relevant to design practice; • Membership in relevant professional organizations; • Demonstrated record of successful teaching; • Ability to develop and teach innovative curriculum; • Ability to advise and mentor graduate students; • Record of publication/creative activity and/or external funding support; • Passion for design, including active participation in design practice or creative scholarship; • Capacity to teach design foundations; • Ability to support interdisciplinary initiatives in teaching and research with other disciplines in the Faculty (architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, environmental design); • Proficiency in a range of current modes of digital communication, including knowledge of at least one 3D modeling software program; • Demonstrated expertise in contemporary modes of fabrication and construction, materials, or sustainable design practices. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The Department of Interior Design is an esteemed North American program with a long history of excellence. The first Bachelors of Interior Design and Masters of Interior Design degrees in Canada originated from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. The graduate program in interior design offers students an intensive opportunity to study design and apply theory within a prescribed series of studios and seminars and an in-depth independent practicum project. Interior design is one of four graduate departments in the Faculty of Architecture alongside Architecture, City Planning, and Landscape Architecture.
