In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.</p> <p>A full-time bioinformatics postdoctoral researcher / Systems Administrator position is available in an innovative and interdisciplinary computational biology and genomics laboratory. The individual researcher will be responsible for creative, supervised design, development, and integration of existing and new bioinformatics databases and software --- both alone and in collaboration with other computational biologists. A research project involving novel algorithm development for genome rearrangement evolution will be the primary focus of the researcher. <br> <br>Additional responsibilities will include administration and maintenance of a Mac OS X/UNIX-based workgroup and high performance computing cluster with a user-load of about 8 users or less. <br> <br>The position is available immediately. Initial appointment will be one year, with possible renewal on a year-to-year basis. The University is supportive of dual career couples.</p> <p>A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics or Biology and a minimum of two years of professional experience in systems administration or computational research support including Perl, Apache, MySQL and administration of Mac OS x or UNIX-based systems and/or networks. Experience with MPI, XGrid, and SGE is highly desirable. An interest in database and algorithm design and open source software engineering is essential. Prior experience in bioinformatics is required. Experience with statistics and genome rearrangement algorithms highly desirable. Strong communication and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a team environment. Skill to organize and prioritize a diversified workload with attention to detail and multiple deadlines. Effective interpersonal skills to establish cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff and students.
