The University of Alberta in partnership with the Government of Alberta is investing significant resources to grow basic and translational research capacity of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Dentistry. In addition to two new endowed research chairs, these new funds will permit recruiting up to five senior and junior faculty pursuing basic research in the origins of oral inflammatory diseases (e.g. Periodontitis). The team of researchers will occupy new research space in the recently completed Katz building and have opportunities to be cross-appointed to other appropriate departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
Working within the School of Dentistry, the team will play a critical role in helping us become one of the top-tier schools in Canada and beyond by raising our research profile. This team will:
Comprise researchers studying oral microbiology, innate immunity, inflammatory signaling, disease genomics, and cell biology as well as the links between oral diseases and other systemic diseases
Complement the existing strengths in the Alberta Diabetes Institute, Cardiovascular Research Centre, and others groups studying inflammation and immunology
Leverage opportunities for collaborating with the National Institute for Nanotechnology, and Department of Biomedical Engineering for researchers studying diagnostics and/or materials sciences
Leverage new infrastructure available to all faculty including medical and cellular imaging, flow cytometry, animal facilities, biocontainment, structural biology, microarray and siRNA screening.
These tenure or tenure-track positions will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank, depending on qualifications and experience. Applicants must have a PhD, post-doctoral experience and a publication history in one of the areas listed above. More senior applicants (Associate and Full Professor) are expected to have a history of independent grant funding, international reputation and evidence of team leadership skills.
The School of Dentistry’s five-year academic plan includes the development of new clinical, research and teaching facilities along with staff recruitment. In alignment with the Faculty, the School of Dentistry is focused on building its overall research capacity with the goal of further improving our world-class programs.
