Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Strong candidates for this position will have research interest and experience in health services research, community based research or primary care research. A proven track record of pursuing and obtaining extramural funds would be of benefit to an applicant, as would experience in leading research teams in the conduct of health services, community, or primary care research. This position is available to researchers in the beginning of their career or can be modified for a mature experienced researcher who is ready for a leadership role. Academic credentials appropriate to the selected faculty rank are necessary, with the associate and full professor rank requiring the applicant to meet criteria for tenure at UW Madison.
Principal duties:
The UW Department of Family Medicine (DFM) (http://www.fammed.wisc.edu/) seeks a candidate to join a leading family medicine research department as a faculty researcher. This faculty member will have responsibilities that include research, teaching medical students, residents and others in clinical and research settings, as well as clinical care responsibilities if an MD. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a departmental community health initiative designed to bridge the gap between academic medicine, the health care delivery system and the community. S/he will join a group of DFM faculty who conduct research in focus areas such as alcohol, substance abuse, obesity prevention, complementary and alternative medicine, health care literacy, and primary care services. There are excellent opportunities to collaborate with a group of health services researchers within the department, across the Madison and the UW System Campuses, the State Department of Health Services, and Wisconsin communities through the Department’s Statewide Clinical Campus. This includes opportunity to work with partners in the UW Madison Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (www.ictr.wisc.edu) and it’s centers: the Collaborative Center for Health Equity (https://ictr.wisc.edu/HealthEquityCenter) and Community Health Connections, (https://ictr.wisc.edu/CHC); and to partner with the Milwaukee Center for Urban and Population Health (http://www.cuph.org/). Extensive resources to support health services research are available through the department and the ICTR Health Innovation Program (www.hip.wisc.edu ) as well as the Wisconsin Partnership Program (http://www.med.wisc.edu/wisconsin-partnership-program/main/499). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the research, education, and service missions of the Department of Family Medicine and the University. He or she will be expected to pursue and secure independent funding and continue/develop a robust health services research program in collaboration with other DFM faculty and scientists or faculty across the University System, as well as leaders from Wisconsin communities. Depending on prior experience, the faculty member will be expected to provide research mentoring to junior faculty and fellows. The candidate will meet regularly with research team members to develop and submit grant proposals for external funding, oversee grant activities, supervise and participate in data collection and analysis, and examine project results, develop human subjects protocols, collaborate in the preparation and writing of progress reports and publications, and in the presentation of the research project at local, regional and national meetings. The faculty will be expected to participate in professional, public and university service and faculty governance appropriate to the faculty rank.

EXPERIENCE and ABILITY The University of Wisconsin, Department of Family Medicine, a leader in family medicine research, is seeking an MD or PhD Health Services Researcher with experience in health services and/or community based research. Success in obtaining external funding is a plus, as is demonstrated work with minority populations in the area of health and health inequalities, experience with community program evaluation, or primary care research networks. The preferred candidate will excel in effective and positive communication; be able to work collaboratively across the university and the state, as well as independently. S/he will have experience in developing and working in community based participatory research, and/or health services research on a large scale. S/he should be familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods, data collection and analysis and summarizing and publishing research findings. The ideal candidate will be looking to lead their own project, publish extensively and develop new research initiatives. More experienced candidates will be expected to provide research mentoring to junior faculty and fellows.
